I am proud to present the 13th edition of our newsletter, which has been timed so that it is available in synchronization with the Matchmaking Event taking place during the International Textile conference in Aachen on 29th & 30th of November 2018.

This conference is considered as one of the most important textile conferences in Europe with approximately 600 participants. Starting in 2016, each of these three cities (Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf) takes it in turn to host the International Textile Conference on a yearly rotation basis.

The main topics of the conference are:
• Materials, Chemistry, Finishing & Functionalization
• Textile Machinery, Manufacturing, Composites with Plenary Talks and Special Symposia on
• Functionalization and New Materials
• Textile Machinery and New Technologies
• Trends & New Markets in the Field of Building & Construction
• Trends & New Markets in the Field of Medical Textiles
• Transfer-Session: R&D projects in small and medium-sized enterprises

One might wonder why the sustainable construction sector group is interested to participate in a textile conference. The answer is easy: 'Turning Fibers into Valuable Construction Material' is what we are aiming for.

This is the first year that the Enterprise Europe Network is organising an International Brokerage Event during the Textile conference in Aachen. Below you may find some interesting profiles submitted to the B2B platform. This Matchmaking event is organised in collaboration with both the Sustainable Construction Sector Group and the Textile and Fashion Sector Group.

Taking this opportunity, the two sectors groups are organising a joint meeting during the conference as well, in order to investigate the possibility of further collaborations with fruitful results. A prize will be given to the member bringing the most interesting and innovative item or material which combines both textiles and construction. So start searching for something to surprise us and get the creative-co-operative energy flowing!!!!

For those of you who are still looking for ideas, do not forget to read the Inspiration Articles below. This time we have not one, but two inspiration articles. One article from Brussels, on student housing using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). This is an impressive mix of conserved buildings and new constructions around a large landscaped garden, which respects the neoclassic architecture of the already existing buildings, using at the same time the sustainable and pioneering properties of CLT.

The second inspiration article is about a cultural Journey in China. Are you a European SME in the construction machinery industry looking to understand new supplier or customer relationships in China? If yes, then read this article and get motivated!!!

For extra inspiration and boost, our Technology Article coming from Germany is top of the pops!! State-of-the art vegetation for buildings and urban landscapes is what is needed in a city with dense construction.

Don’t forget to have a look at the other Matchmaking Events organised by the sustainable construction sector group, as well as our Research Successes, which are something we are very proud of.

I am looking forward to seeing you at one of our events !!

Free mission to China for the construction and mechanisation sectors

A group of European furniture manufacturers, looking to expand their markets to east Asia, travelled to Guangzhou in China to visit one of the largest furniture fairs in the region. Translated business cards in hand, this group spread out across the floor to talk with potential distributors and partners. Much to shock of a few of the small companies in the group, they found exact replicas of their European-made products.

Launch of the STUNNING Renovation Hub: EU platform for energy-efficient refurbishment technologies and business models

The EU-funded, Horizon 2020 project STUNNING, which promotes the accelerated adoption of successful business models for energy-efficient building refurbishments, launched the STUNNING Renovation Hub in September 2018. It is a virtual platform for interactive knowledge exchange and enables all participating stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences through accessing and submitting articles on their innovative refurbishment packages, replicable business models and case studies on the successful implementation of their energy-efficient refurbishment.

For further information please visit our STUNNING project website and the newly launched site of the Renovation Hub.

COUNTRY ROFILE - Campania and Puglia

ENEA, as member of Enterprise Europe Network within Bridgeconomies Consortium, operates in Campania and Puglia regions located in the South of Italy.

In the Country, over 65% of constructions have been built before 1970-80, when very little was ruled by national law about energy efficiency and sustainability in general. There is therefore a great potential to operate in the field.

This is the reason why several universities and research centers focus their research activities in sustainable constructions, either in terms of environmental impact of materials and methodologies used in the construction process, either in terms of sustainability in the building utilization, as for example, energy efficiency. The same applies to several companies that are developing research and business in the field for the same reasons.
In Campania and Puglia, the two regions where ENEA, as member of EEN, operates, there is a very active innovation ecosystem.

In Campania, as an example, there are:
• 7 universities, (6 public and one private) with over 12 thousand researchers and teachers and 180K students
• 40 advanced research centers active in technology transfer and innovation services
• 7 High-Tech Districts and 21 public private laboratories operating in the regional strategic fields where sustainable construction is one of the most relevant.
• 25 structures to support entrepreneurship (incubators, science and technology parks, Fab lab, accelerators and service centers)

Città della Scienza, one of the largest european Science & Business Centres
1 billion euro invested in Research and Innovation Policies (+Digital Agenda) 2014-2020
Puglia, on the other hand, is a leading Region in the production of clean energy, holding first place in the production of wind and photo-voltaic energy and third in bio-energies.

The Region is also part of a sustainable urban planning. Apulian construction companies are, in fact, incentivized to build structures that are increasingly energy efficient and that have a progressively lesser impact on the landscape, achieved in part through the use of natural materials of local origin.

A Apulian Sustainable Construction Business Cluster has been recently established to develop sustainable construction in Puglia and to promote production quality in the market. The strategic aims are to strengthen the relationship between firms and public agencies; to stimulate engineering quality through environmental impact reduction and finally to promote technological research and innovation. The cluster also operates to broaden the market, targeting products and services with higher added value. In addition, it facilitates the development of new professional profiles able to disseminate sustainability in construction and urban development. The cluster includes: 165 companies, 10 research centers and universities, 11 training schools, 24 agencies, associations, professional orders and financial credit institutionss.

The Autumn Sustainable Construction Sector Group Meeting will be co-organised together with the SG Textile and Fashion in Aachen, Germany on the 29th and 30th of November 2018.

The two SGs will meet together on the 29th in order to investigate possibilities of collaboration with regard to smart textiles used for construction applications.

On the 30th of November the two SGs will co-organise a Brokerage event, which will take place within the International Textile Conference that is realized in Aachen. This is the first time that a B2B is organised in parallel to this conference.

This annual conference is considered to be one of the most important textile conferences in Europe with over 600 participants. Since 2016, the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research, Denkendorf (DITF) is also a co-organizer. Thus, the International Textile Conference takes place in one of the following cities: Aachen, Dresden, Denkendorf on a yearly alternating basis. In 2018 the Conference will take place in Aachen.

Gregor Stolarczyk, who is our host for this meeting, has already made arrangements for all the Sustainable Construction SG and Textile SG members to enter the conference without charge.

The topics of the Conference are: Materials, Chemistry, Finishing & Functionalization Textile Machinery, Manufacturing, Composites.

During the conference there will be Plenary Talks and Special Symposia on:
- Functionalization and New Materials
- Textile Machinery and New Technologies
- Trends and New Markets
- Textiles for Medicine and Health Care
- Textiles for Building and Construction

In this particular joint SG meeting and B2B, we would like to investigate the possibilities of new and innovative textiles that can be used for construction. The participants will be asked to bring with them samples of smart textiles with applications in the construction sector. Alternatively, they could also present, in a ppt presentation, company products with textiles that can be used in the building sector to improve building performance.
